Privacy Policy

Puckit Holdings LLC ("Nihon Local," "we," "us," "our") runs the website nihonlocal.com and the Nihon Local email newsletters. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

Information we collect

• Newsletter signup: your email address and the answers you give on our signup form, such as whether you're visiting or living in a town and whether you'd like to hear when other editions start. We also record where the signup came from (for example, a QR card or a link in an email).
• Email activity: like most newsletters, our email platform records whether an email was delivered, opened, and which links were clicked. We use this to see what readers find useful.
• Event listings: if you submit an event, we collect your name, organization, email address, phone number (optional), website (optional), and the event details you provide.
• Messages: anything you include when you email us.
• Server logs: our web host keeps standard logs, including IP addresses, for security. Our forms also use your IP address briefly to limit repeated submissions.

We don't collect payment information, and we don't run advertising networks or analytics tracking on this website.

How we use your information

• To send the newsletter you signed up for, in the edition and series that fit your answers
• To review, verify, translate, and publish the events you submit, and to contact you about them
• To answer your messages and privacy requests
• To keep our website and forms secure, and to meet legal obligations

When we publish an event, we publish the event's details (name, dates, venue, description, and event page). We don't publish the contact details you give us.

We don't sell your information.

Who we share it with

We share information only with the services that run Nihon Local for us:

• Beehiiv, which stores our subscriber list and sends the newsletter. See Beehiiv's privacy policy.
• Our web host, which runs this website and our forms and stores event submissions.
• Our email provider, which receives event submissions and messages you send us.

These services are based in the United States. If you're in Japan, this means your personal information is transferred outside Japan. The United States doesn't have a data protection system that Japan recognizes as equivalent to its own, so we ask for your consent to this transfer: by subscribing or submitting an event, you consent to it.

We don't share your information with anyone else, except when the law requires it or to protect our legal rights.

Email: your consent and how to opt out

We only email people who asked for it by subscribing. Every newsletter identifies Nihon Local as the sender, includes our postal address, and has an unsubscribe link. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link at the bottom of any email. After you unsubscribe, we keep a record that you did, so we don't email you again.

If you submit an event, we'll email you only about that listing.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what information we hold about you, and to ask us to correct it, delete it, or stop using it. To make a request, email hello@nihonlocal.com.

How long we keep it

We keep your email address while you're subscribed. We keep event submissions for as long as the listing is relevant, and up to one year after the event, so we can answer questions about it. If you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your information, we'll delete it within a reasonable time, unless the law requires us to keep it.

Cookies

The nihonlocal.com website doesn't set cookies, and doesn't use analytics or advertising trackers. If that changes, we'll update this policy first and ask for your consent before setting any cookie that isn't strictly needed. Pages hosted by Beehiiv, such as the web version of an issue, follow Beehiiv's own cookie policy.

Children

Nihon Local isn't directed to children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn we have, we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this policy as Nihon Local grows, for example when we add paid event placements. Changes will be posted here with a new date.
