🚃 Getting there

🚃
Recommended · 35 min by rapid train · ¥800 one way

JR train from Sapporo Station

Take the JR Hakodate Line west. The Rapid Airport (快速エアポート) takes about 35 minutes; local trains take about 45. Both cost ¥800, and IC cards such as Suica and Kitaca work. Not every Airport train runs to Otaru, so check that the board says 小樽 (Otaru). For the view, sit on the right-hand side: between Zenibako and Otaru-Chikko the line runs right along the sea. Car 4 is reserved seating (u-Seat), an extra ¥1,000, or ¥800 booked online through Eki-net.

Slightly cheaper and slower than the train. Buses leave from stop 1 in front of Sapporo Station and end at the bus terminal by JR Otaru Station. IC cards and contactless credit cards are accepted.

Which station to get off at

Get off at Otaru for Sankaku Market and the walk down to the canal. Minami-Otaru, one stop earlier, is the closer station for the far end of Sakaimachi Street and the Music Box Museum. Rapid trains stop at both. The route below starts at Otaru and finishes at Minami-Otaru.

About 10 minutes on foot from the station

Otaru Canal, then north to the quiet end

Walk straight down Chuo-dori to the canal. The stretch by Asakusa Bridge is the famous view, and it's busy with visitors during the day. Keep walking north along the promenade to the North Canal (北運河), where the canal keeps its original 40-meter width, with moored boats and old warehouses. The city is actively encouraging visitors to spread out this way. Canal cruises (35–40 minutes) leave from beside Chuo Bridge: ¥1,800 by day, ¥2,000 at night.

Sakaimachi Street (堺町通り)

Otaru's main shopping street, lined with Meiji-, Taisho-, and Showa-era buildings that now hold glass studios, sweet shops, and seafood restaurants. It runs between Otaru and Minami-Otaru, so it's the natural walk back toward the station.

If you can stay into the evening, the canal's 63 gas lamps come on at sunset and burn until midnight, and the stone warehouses are lit until 22:30. Check the last train first (see below).

🌊 Beat the crowds

🌅
8.35 million visitors in the year to March 2026

Go early, and go north

Visitors bunch up in the same places at the same times, and the city formed an overtourism council in February 2025 to deal with it. Its trial fixes point the way: early-morning outings and walks toward the North Canal. Start at the market around 7:00, see the canal before mid-morning, and save Sakaimachi's shops for last.

Check before you pick a day

Avoid cruise-ship days if you can

Large cruise ships dock at Otaru's Pier 3 and bring extra visitors into the canal area and Sakaimachi. The city publishes the port-call schedule; if your dates are flexible, pick a day with no ship in.

Funami-zaka and other hillside photo spots

Mind the working streets

The slope streets with sea views, such as Funami-zaka, are among the spots the city is watching for crowding. They're ordinary roads with traffic and neighbors, so take your photo from the sidewalk and move on.
