The stretch by Asakusa Bridge is the famous view, and it's busy with visitors during the day. Walk north along the promenade to the North Canal (北運河), which keeps its original 40-meter width, with moored boats and old warehouses; the city is encouraging visitors to spread out this way. The 63 gas lamps are lit from sunset to midnight. Canal cruises (35–40 minutes) leave from beside Chuo Bridge: ¥1,800 by day, ¥2,000 at night.
Otaru Tourism Association ↗ Otaru Canal Cruise ↗Otaru's main shopping street, lined with Meiji-, Taisho-, and Showa-era buildings that now hold glass studios, sweet shops, and seafood restaurants. It runs between Otaru and Minami-Otaru stations.
Sakaimachi Street association ↗A café lit only by 167 oil lamps. Every morning at opening, staff light them one by one, and you can watch from 9:00 to 9:30, first come, first served. It's a good reason to be on Sakaimachi before the crowds. The café serves from 9:30, with last orders at 16:30.
Kitaichi Glass ↗The main hall at the end of Sakaimachi, full of music boxes to browse. The upper floors close at 17:45. Minami-Otaru Station is under 10 minutes' walk away.
Otaru Orgel-do ↗A hilltop shrine founded in 1859, with a main hall from 1919 and a view over Otaru Harbor. The Tourism Association suggests walking up through the Hanazono Ginza shopping street, across Hanazono Bridge, and up the stone steps.
Otaru Tourism Association ↗The Bank of Japan's former Otaru branch, now a free museum. Open 9:30–17:00 from April to November and 10:00–17:00 from December to March, with last entry at 16:30. Closed Wednesdays (open if Wednesday is a holiday) and Dec 29–Jan 5.
Bank of Japan Otaru Museum ↗Five buildings near the canal, most of them historic: the Nitori Museum of Art in a former bank, a stained glass museum, the former Mitsui Bank Otaru branch (an Important Cultural Property), a Western art museum, and an ukiyo-e museum. One ticket covers all five: ¥3,500 at the door, ¥3,000 online. Hours are shorter from November to April, so check the calendar before you go.
Otaru Art Base ↗ Tickets ↗The city museum on the site of the old Temiya railway facilities, with about 50 rail vehicles, including the steam locomotive Shizuka. From the JR Otaru Station bus terminal, take bus 10 or 2 to the Sogo Hakubutsukan (総合博物館) stop, about 15–20 minutes. Winter rates run from early November to late April, when some outdoor exhibits close.
City of Otaru ↗ Otaru Tourism Association ↗Free. Short. Just the stuff worth your time.
A seafood market one minute's walk from the station: turn left out of the exit and up the short stairs. Come early for a seafood rice bowl. Hours vary by shop.
Otaru Tourism Association ↗Otaru's sake brewery sells from a 1927 shop building with old signboards and account books on display. You can usually taste 10 to 15 of its sakes and liqueurs. Tasting isn't offered to drivers, cyclists, or anyone under 20.
Otaru Tourism Association ↗The ropeway up Tenguyama for a view over the city and harbor, billed as one of Hokkaido's three great night views. Cars run every 12 minutes. Take bus 9 from bay 4 at the JR Otaru Station terminal, about 20 minutes and ¥240. The area around the ropeway base is one of the spots the city is watching for congestion, so the bus is the easy choice. Winter-season dates and fares are announced separately.
Otaru Tourism Association ↗ Tenguyama: access ↗ City of Otaru ↗Otaru's aquarium. The 2026 season runs Mar 14 – Nov 23, open 9:00–17:00 until Oct 15 and 9:00–16:00 after that, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Children are ¥700 and small children (3 and up) ¥350. Buses leave from bay 3 at the JR Otaru Station terminal. Last year it also had a shorter winter season, Dec 13 – Feb 23; check for this winter's dates.
Otaru Aquarium ↗ Otaru Tourism Association ↗What's on during your visit: festivals, exhibitions, and a food pick, checked against local sources.
Trains and fares, a simple walking route, and the last train back.
Visitors bunch up in the same places at the same times. The city's own trial fixes are early-morning outings and walks toward the North Canal, and large cruise ships bring extra visitors on the days they dock. Start early, head north along the canal, and check the port schedule if your dates are flexible.
